Read Like Your Life Depends On It

A few weeks ago, I sent out an edition of this newsletter titled Write like your life depends on it.

I received great feedback. Now I’m here with the other side of the coin.

This week, I heard a truly alarming statistic. I could've sworn they were making it up.

Here's what I heard:

  • 54% of Adults in the USA read below the 6th-grade level of English
  • And 20% below the 5th grade

I had to fact-check for myself, and it's painfully true. (Source)

The rate of literacy across the globe is dropping, and I believe it's caused by one thing.

People have stopped reading!

Not too long ago, books were an escape and a treat for most of us.

One of my favourite childhood memories is my Mom taking my sisters and me book shopping.

We loved Enid Blyton's books! They were filled with so much wonder (IYKYK).

Today, libraries and book stores feel more like museums rather than places of knowledge, inspiration, and growth.

Unfortunately, we have traded books for modern-day developments like smartphones and social media. (Not hating on these by the way😅)

The excitement we get from books can’t compete with the dopamine from scrolling through funny videos on social media.

It just can't!

And then some argue: 'Why do I need to read a book when I can just find the information on the internet?'

Here’s the truth: Books contain a whole lot more than information.

They give you an invitation to step into the mind of the Author.

Beyond the information, you also get the mindset, attitude, thoughts, ideas, and most importantly, the personal transformation.

If you want to expand your mind, read more.

And if what works for you is audiobooks, that’s totally fine!

Just read and don't stop reading. Be a lifelong reader.

Remember, readers are leaders.

Rooting for you always!!!
