Stop Searching for Your Purpose
One of the most important things we all try to figure out at some point in life is why we are on this earth.
Some call it purpose or calling, others destiny. But it's all the same.
We are all trying to find that thing we are meant to do for the rest of our lives that brings us joy, a sense of fulfilment, and hopefully pays our bills.
Recently, I was thinking about how there is a lot of advice on finding your purpose by identifying things we are good at and choosing a path that takes advantage of those skills.
Now, I agree with this advice, but only to a certain extent.
How do you apply this when you are great at multiple things that aren't connected? Do you pick just one, or do you find a path in life that combines a few?
This becomes very complicated for those of us who are multi-passionate (fancy word for having multiple interests).
Quick story:
I grew up tagging along with my Mom to her choir rehearsals. Watching the musicians play and the choir sing always struck a chord in my heart, and I fell in love with music.
But I also watched my Dad preach every week and lead a church ever since I can remember.
Combine all that with my love for business, entrepreneurship, technology, engineering, cars, etc. It became very confusing as to what my purpose was.
How was I supposed to find 'one thing' that combines all these interests?
Short answer: I didn't need to 🙃
Instead of spending so much energy on trying to figure out what that 'one thing' is, how about we focus on being the best version of ourselves today?
There is only so much progress you can make if your efforts are divided between figuring out your 'one thing' and what you are currently doing.
Life has a way of working out such that all your strengths, experiences, and passions are not wasted. But you only get to this point by being diligent with what you currently have in your hands.
This is not to say you should ignore the things you are great at. If anything, I'm saying double down on them!
Rather than trying to figure out a specific purpose, be purposeful with what you do today and serve those around you.
Sooner or later, you'll realize the purpose you've been searching for has found you.
Rooting for you always!
