Your Hands Aren’t Empty
The easiest way to explain anything to anyone is by making it visual.
Most humans can hear up to 1000 words per minute, while we only speak 150-200 words per minute.
This means when we listen to anyone speak, only a fraction of our mind is engaged.
But when we watch a visual, the whole mind is captured.
I remember learning arithmetic through the use of these visual aids.
My teacher would have us hold tiny wooden blocks, and when it came time to learn subtraction, she removed a few of the blocks from our hands.
She would then ask: What do you have in your hands? How many are there?
We would then slowly count what was left in our hands, one at a time. Half the time we did this, I thought we were just playing games.🥴
Later on, I would realize that this principle was something I would need.
We go through life acquiring different things in our hands. Jobs, relationships, skills, wealth, experiences, etc
But here's the twist.
Life also has a way of taking some things out of our hands. Through positive or negative events like layoffs, breakups, promotions, or relocations...
What do you do then?
Do you continue to cry over what was lost, or do you count what is in your hands?
By going back to counting what is in your hands, you can take advantage of what you have.
Let’s make it practical. A couple of years ago, I was laid off. It hurt, it stung, but it happened.
Initially, I was in denial, but as soon as I came to terms with it, I realized I had to find something to work on.
It was in that season that I was able to finally revisit a startup idea my cofounder and I had taken a break from.
This newsletter is also a result of the deep self-work that happened in that season.
Life happens, but know this: Your hands are never empty.
Count what you have in your hands. It’s more than you think.
Rooting for you always!
