Thought: You Become What You See
One of the many things I am grateful for in this season is watching my son grow. It's amazing watching him learn, speak, understand, and grow into his person.
What has been most fascinating is that he seems to be learning even when we are not actively teaching. Recently, I saw him react to a situation with the same expression my wife had and then walk with his hands in his pocket just like we do because its stone cold this winter. (See what I did there, iykyk 🤫)
I was thinking about all of this and realized that learning by observation is not just an ability reserved for children. As an adult, over the years, there are skills, traits, details, mannerisms, words, expressions, that you pick up unknowingly. They all form a part of who you are.
However, if we are not careful we can easily pick up the bad as well as the good. Most adults believe they are not easily influenced and this is true to an extent. But, the reality is that who you are today is a result of all you have seen through life. Nothing ever leaves you!
If all your life you were exposed to the world of finance and banking, there is a very great chance that you might pursue a career along those lines. On the other hand, if your parents were professional athletes, you might end up in the world of sports.
All I am saying is, we become what we see. And if you don’t like what you have become, you need to change what you see.
You can’t keep doing the same thing, with the same people, in the same place and expect different results. According to the famous quote falsely attributed to Albert Einstein, that’s insanity! 🤷🏾
One of the biggest decisions I made almost 5 years ago was moving my family to a new city. It changed my beliefs, thoughts and opinions on what I thought was possible. I was coming from a smaller city earning a decent salary only to move and realize my counterparts were earning significantly more. This was all the motivation I needed!
Now, I am not saying you should move (if you need to, you probably should). But, if you don’t like your current situation, change what you see.
The change will be uncomfortable and challenging but the regret of knowing that you could be living a different life is a worse feeling.
It’s time for a change.
Rooting for you as always!
