A life with no regrets: Change your focus

Hey there, it’s Oba.

In today’s issue, we uncover how we can live without regret.

πŸ‘€ Random finds: Color blind Zuck!

Facebook's color scheme is blue because owner Mark Zuckerberg suffers from red-green color-blindness.

I thought it was just a design choice. 🀨

πŸ’‘ Thought: Regret is optional

In my final year of high school, I'd have the radio playing as I studied late into the night.

During one of my study sessions, I heard an interesting question.

This was over 15 years ago, yet I can still hear it as clear as day.

The radio host asked, β€œIs it possible to live a life without regret?”

5 people called in; surprisingly their answers were all the same.

They all believed that regret was a part of life.

And that no one could live life without it.

That question stuck with me for many years up until about 4 years ago.

I was reflecting on a major decision I had made.

My decision seemed like it had only yielded negative results.

It was through that experience I realized what I am sharing today.

I realized that regret was only possible if I focused entirely on the negative outcome.

Here’s the thing.

We regret our actions, inactions, decisions, words, etc if we believe they resulted in a negative outcome.

However, the negative outcome exists only because there is a positive one.

And I’m not talking about your desired vs actual results.

This is a law of nature - the law of polarity.

Everything has a positive and negative side. Everything in this world has two sides to it.

Coins, Magnets, Batteries, Stories, Directions, etc

If you think an outcome is entirely negative, that's not the whole truth.

Our minds are just wired to focus on the negative.

We must be intentional about looking for positive outcomes even in negative situations.

For example, if we consider situations like:

  • A business venture failing
  • A decision that doesn't yield the desired result
  • A relationship ending because of miscommunication

We immediately think these are entirely negative.

But if we change our perspectives, we can draw positive outcomes from these exact situations:

  • The lessons learned from a business failing
  • The recognition of mistakes made in that decision.
  • The awareness that communication skills need to be improved.

If you're going to live without regret, you must focus on the positive outcomes.

I know. It's optimism on steroids!

Without this mindset, you'll constantly look back at life through the lens of regret.

P.S. Most people won't understand your positivity. They don't have to.

This is your life and you are responsible for it.

Regret is an option. Don't choose it!

πŸ’ͺ🏽 Motivation

β€œ
Do not brood over your past mistakes and failures as this will only fill your mind with grief, regret, and depression. Do not repeat them in the future."
β€” Swami Sivananda

πŸ”₯ Actionable Tip

Reflect on any situation that you have always felt a sense of regret about.

Can you find a positive outcome?
